Opposing Voices and Alternative Perspectives
I’m reminded today of opposing voices and alternative perspectives.
In short, listen to the voices that say things you don’t think you agree with. They have a different perspective, and you might learn something from it.
This ties into my regular reminder that you want diversity on your team – in ways of thinking also. When you have more ideas around the table, you’re more likely to come across a good one (or to mash a bunch of them together to make a great one).
Be aware – diversity can increase conflict. (But remember that conflict isn’t necessarily bad.) Hold each other’s ideas in mind with dignity and respect for the person and where they are coming from. Assume intentions are good. Attack ideas not each other. (You’re all on the same team, trying to head in the same direction – success!) Listen to each other. Speak in a respectful way so they can hear you without becoming defensive. Work collaboratively, not competitively – again, you’re on the same team!
Call me if you need help with this!
How are you creating a workplace that encourages the sharing of diverse ideas? In what ways are you building a psychologically safe place where your team members aren’t holding back their opinions (and facts!)? How do you ensure multiple voices and perspectives are heard when you are trying to solve complex problems?
How does your organization approach conflict? If you embrace it, how do you reconcile any hurt feelings (or lingering grudges) on the “losing” side? What are some ways you could avoid have “winners” and “losers”?
