Conflict at Work

Conflict often occurs in the workplace, whether it’s a disagreement about how a project is being managed or how so-and-so took something from the communal fridge that wasn’t theirs.  Knowing there IS conflict is a lot easier than knowing what to do when you see it (or hear it) – or when it happens to you.

Fortunately for you, the National Conflict Resolution Center has pulled together a few key bullet points on what to do when conflict occurs in the workplace (e.g., don’t take it personally, try to understand the values or fears behind the other person’s position, keep it about the topic not the other person).

They’ve also created a great resource, with printable (and post-able) pages.  Take a look and consider sharing them around your office – in the breakroom, by the copier, near the sinks in the bathroom.  When everyone shares these common approaches to conflict, you may just find yourself more productive (and more willing to confront that person who took your soup).

Just a quick reminder:  Conflict isn’t bad.  Having diverse ideas/perspectives can increase creativity and improve decision making—IF the conflict is approached in a healthy and welcoming manner. How are you encouraging the sharing of different viewpoints? Where are you struggling? When do your people need more support?
